Ideas have consequences and some more drastic than others. Today I had the privilege of touring Auschwitz. The former Nazi concentration camp silently holds the evidence of an ideology.

"Arbeit macht frei (Work brings freedom)"

The camp commandant, Rudolf Höss lived just outside the camp with his wife and five children. When you stand near Rudolf Höss's office (pictured below) you can see his family's home and you can see Block 11, the gas clamber where scores of people were led to their death. How could you raise a family and command millions to be put to death in your garden?

Block 11 (pictured below on left) holds the prison cell that Maximilian Kolbe starved in when he offered to take the death sentence of another man. This is also where the gas chamber was experimented with.

After seeing rooms of human hair and personal belongings of those who perished, the obvious question is how could people commit such atrocities? The simple answer is they believed that these men, women and children where inferior and sub-human.

The U.S. Declaration of Independence contradicts ideology; "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

If men are given life by their Creator they are created equal. If this is not the foundation of human governments history reveals that ideas have consequences.

It's the weekend over here! After getting some much needed rest I went to church. I was able to pick up a lot more of the Polish in the service today than I did last week. One of the church workers heard that I was studying Polish at Jagiellonian University, he told me not to worry because they speak Polish in heaven so I'll have all eternity to learn it. Classes start again early tomorrow morning, so I guess I'll get a headstart;)

The Austen Effect

Blackberrys, iPhones and the Internet buzzed with the words Michael Jackson with the news of the famous musician's passing. President Barack Obama called Michael Jackson a brilliant performer whose talents were paired with a tragic personal life. Jackson like many other artists who left a fingerprint on culture lived a radical life. As a matter a fact he credits his difficult upbringing with his later success.1

Some argue that artists who really make a difference on the world around them must live a radical life. In some instances this is certainly true. However there is one celebrated contributor to culture that lived a quiet and peaceable life. This was the 18th century author Jane Austen. I believe that Jane Austen had three specific strengths that allowed her to leave a mark on culture. First, she celebrated the good aspects of simple lives. Austen's novels often revolved around good people working through ordinary events. Secondly, she made the most out of ordinary things and situations. The little things of life were made more important through elegant storytelling. Lastly, she appealed to people's higher nature. She saw the world the way it really is and described a way that it could be.

Jane Austen lived a relatively normal life and in time achieved far more celebrity than most of her contemporaries. Artists will always pull radical stunts to earn the attention of a watching world. This has been true throughout history and continues till now, but in a day in age where everything is special effects a real story is worth gold.

This presidential election will be a turning point in American history. Essentially we have two options from here: we as a nation can become more free or we can come more controlled. We have had the blessing of being one of the few free nations of the world, voting to keep it that way will be well worth it.

The candidate that supports in true freedom in our country is Ron Paul. Ron Paul is the champion of the constitution. He is a pro-life doctor that has delivered over 4000 babies. He has NEVER voted to raise taxes. I believe he is the man who will be best able to lead our country.

Regardless of your political party, the party keeps people poor is the party that takes their money to spend it on big government programs. We need an administration that has the ability to say no to spending.

Ron Paul is gaining tremendous popularity. Although largely unsupported by the media, he has won the both the Facebook and the MySpace Republican Primary. He is fighting for freedom and he needs our support. If you live in Michigan you can join the fight for freedom January 15, 2008.

Michigan primary is January 15, 2008, the general is November 4th, 2008. Remember to VOTE.

I found out a little more as the story unfolds. Jimmy Mills a friend of mine from church drowned last night. He was with a friend at some lake in Gaylord. I don't know all the details, but it was some kind of swimming accident. I saw him Thursday night at church for calling, if someone would have told me he would meet God the next day I don't think I could have believed it. He was a young guy planning on going to college this fall. Please pray for his family.

I am working on a web promo for Right To Life Lifespan. I wanted to find some place where I could find a lot of crosses cascading into a sunrise. Unfortunately no such place exists that I know of. Computer animation to the rescue, I started to create a virtual scene in Maya. The nice thing about animation is that the camera movements are a mathematical algorithm making for perfectly smooth camera movements. Computer work aside, since the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision 47 million children have been aborted. One third of my generation. Approximately 3,700 unborn children will be terminated today.

Revive Us Again...

I was really lucky to get to go to the Greater Works Conference over spring break. Although our nation at large is trying to rid God from society, revival is still happening around the world. We heard some amazing stories from missionaries about what God is doing in their lands. We definitely need revival in America too, but we need to want it badly enough to do something about it.

I guess I'll be politically correct: Happy Holidays and have a joyous time celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ! I don't know about you, but I'm celebrating the greatest gift ever given.

History and overview of Christian movies.

The term "Christian Movie" used to be a term that meant a poorly done movie coupled with bad production design. Christian movies were made and rented to churches on 16 millimeter film from Christian film libraries across the country. In the 70's 80's and early 90's the 'Christian Movies" almost dried up. By the 1990's VHS distribution was becoming quite popular, this changed Hollywood forever as well as the independent Christian film industry. Independent films could be sold right to viewers.

The independent Christian film industry really took a turn and came out of the dry spell in the late 1990's. In the last six years Christian films have really come back and gone out to the mainstream market. In 2000 what was hailed as the biggest event in Christian cinema went to theaters with the movie "Left Behind." Unfortunately Left Behind didn't turn out to be the break through as hoped. Although it did poorly in theaters, it was phenomenally successful with its VHS and DVD release. Left Behind proved that their was a market for Christian films.

2004 marked Mel Gibson's highly controversial "The Passion Of The Christ." Post "Passion" Hollywood really took Christian film making a lot more seriously. Nearly every studio in Hollywood is now trying to find their "Passion" and get their hands on some kind of Christian film.

Right now Alex Kendrick's "Facing The Giants" 8X Entertainment's "One Night With The King" and Catherine Hardwicke's "The Nativity Story" are all in theaters. Never before have three major Christian movies had a theatrical run at the same time. Christian movies have made a complete turn around in the marketplace.

Where are Christian films going? With major growth there are growing pains. One thing is for sure, Hollywood has not changed their beliefs. The only reason this new fascination in Christianity has come about is because of dollar signs. Hollywood isn't coming around and going to become user friendly. As Christians rise up to make God-glorifying films, pray that success doesn't override the message and cause. We have a world that is desperately in need of the true message of hope that can only be found in a relationship with Jesus Christ. The art of story telling with stories worth telling is a movie worth watching.

Directing The Nativity Story...

An illustrator friend of mine who worked on the starscape for "Late For Church" used to work with Catherine Hardwicke while she was still a production designer. The other day he told me a personal story, "The Nativity Story" sounds like a story worth supporting.
